Historically Mersing was opened back in 1892 by MOHD SALLEH BIN PERANG, who held the title of Dato’ Bentara Luar. An interview with one Mr. Hussin bin Mohamad however suggests that the Dato’ Bentara Luar was only involved in land surveying for the Mersing district. Oral history with regard to how Mersing got its name, points to a Sikh man by the name of Amir Singh or Men Singh. He is said to have been a fugitive from neighbouring Pahang, where he had taken the liberty of liberating a concubine from the Sultan of Pahang.
