On July 13, 2005, the Cabinet had approved 27 Universities in Malaysia upgraded to the Institute of Teacher Education (ITE). From institutions that only produce graduates diploma and certificate, the institution now has a mandate that entitles awarded a Bachelor of Teaching. The implications of these upgrades make IPG (Institut Pendidikan Guru) a higher educational institution of university status.
